Recap: The New Normal opening/reception (10-NNDW/W02-3)

It’s a strange twist of fate that I had just written a post related to surveillance on one of my other blogs just two days before this exhibit opened, without even thinking about it. I was already looking forward to this since posting it on the monthly LOVIEE two weeks ago, and I was not disappointed at all.

Rather than give an in-depth accounting of all the exhibits, I’ll pick the three I found most interesting. I did not stick around long enough to look at everything completely, and I will probably return at some point prior to the exhibit closing.

First up: “Once Upon A Time” by Corinna Schnitt, a single-channel video with sound with a running time of 25 minutes. I expect relatively few of the visitors will come to this exhibit expecting humor. In summary: a living room is turned into a zoo, quite literally, and with quite amusing results. And I do mean a zoo: cats, dogs, small birds, all the way up to larger barnyard animals including at least one goat (maybe two) and one cow. I chuckled several times during the 15 minutes or so that I saw; probably not the reaction the artist was going for, I will admit, but I find it hard not to laugh while watching such things as a goat eating houseplants.

Second: “Chic Point” by Sharif Waked, a much shorter video piece (5 minutes, 10 seconds according to the program). This is a spoof of a fashion show where the men show apparel reconfigured for passing through the Israeli border security checkpoints: cropped-out suit jackets exposing the abdomen, part of the breast exposed through a T-shirt, etc. The end of the video shows several disturbing still pictures that served as the inspiration: men forced to expose themselves to Israeli border guards to prove they were not suicide bombers.

Third: “Vice Presidential Downtime Requirements” by Jennifer and Kevin McCoy. This is an installation with store-bought products based on a list leaked to thesmokinggun.com describing Dick Cheney’s requirements as sent to a local hotel. I can describe this all I want, but one actually has to see this, in person, in order to fully appreciate it. It’s only appropriate that an exhibition based on a quote by Vice President Dick Cheney contains a piece which references him and exposes him the same way that the onerous and odious surveillance has exposed the rest of us. The link should give you some idea what to expect.

Every piece in this exhibit is worth looking at; the detailed descriptions of these three alone are not intended to slight the rest of the exhibition in the least. Most notably, there are at least two pieces that make use of a live Internet connection in some form.

For those that missed the opening reception, The New Normal runs through February 20, and the hours of the DiverseWorks Gallery are Wednesday through Saturday, noon to 6pm.

2010-01-11/17 Weekly LOVIEE

Lots of great stuff on tap this week. There’s something for everyone. I’ve tried to find a good variety of events. I know some of you are terminally curious as to what goes on during the making of this blog; I plan to make a “making of” video or two and put them up on YouTube in the coming weeks.

As always there’s the ongoing LOVIEE, soon to be revamped. Actually, quite a few things around here need revamping; I’ll talk more about that later this week.

All week

The Ice at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney. $10 including tax and skate rental, see Web site for detailed hours and group discount information. More details in the monthly LOVIEE. Last full week this attraction will be available. 09/10-IADG

Opening Tuesday 01-12

Rain or Shine: How Houston Developed Space City Baseball, The Heritage Society Museum, 1100 Bagby, Tue-Sat 10am-4pm, Sun 1-4pm. Co-presented with the Houston Astros and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame (TBHOF), this exhibit catalogues the history of baseball in Houston, featuring treasures from the Astros, TBHOF, and other contributors. 10-ROS

Wednesday 01-13

Charlie Robison at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk, 7:30pm, $25. Houston-born country artist with a sound very reminiscent of the country music I grew up with in the 1980s, yet he doesn’t sound dated. Charlie came out with a new album (Beautiful Day) last year after taking a four-year hiatus from recording. Another great country show to help us get in the mood for the rodeo. 10-W02-1

American Mantra at Bohemeo’s, 708 Telephone Rd, 8:30pm, $10. Grunge/90s style rock band from Dallas, TX. 10-W02-2

Friday 01-15

The New Normal opening reception, DiverseWorks main gallery, 1117 East Freeway, 6-8pm. The exhibit is themed on the heightened surveillance that has become all too commonplace in the post-9/11 era; in fact, the title comes from a quote by US Vice President Dick Cheney. Featured artists: Sophie Calle, Mohamed Camara, Hasan Elahi, Eyebeam R & D/ Jonah Peretti & Michael Frumin, Kota Ezawa, Miranda July and Harrell Fletcher, Guthrie Lonergan, Jill Magid, Jennifer and Kevin McCoy, Trevor Paglen, Corinna Schnitt, Thomson & Craighead, and Sharif Waked. The exhibit is curated by Michael Connor, and will be open through 2010 February 20. 10-NNDW/W02-3

2010-01-04/10 Weekly LOVIEE

And here we are, the first full week of the New Year. And as expected, everything is pretty much back in full swing. In the next week or two I’ll be renovating the ongoing LOVIEE, expanding it into a full section, and possibly re-highlighting more of those events particularly on slower weeks. In the months ahead I’l be working on a redesign of the site, to be unveiled in April or maybe sooner if I’m completely happy with it sooner.

2010-01-01/31 Monthly LOVIEE

What a great way to start off 2010. This month’s LOVIEE is chock full of stuff and these are just the big events. Pass the word, the holidays are over, and the Houston arts, events, and music scene is back in full swing!

Continuing Through Monday 01-18

The Ice at Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney. $10 including tax and skate rental, see Web site for detailed hours and group discount information. Yes, it’s back, an outdoor ice rink in Houston! The model boat basin portion of Kinder Lake (the part directly behind the Anheuser-Busch stage) will be frozen over using renewable energy and transformed into an ice skating rink. If you’ve moved from up north and lack of outdoor ice skating makes you homesick, here’s your chance for some relief; if you just want an ice skating fix, hey, still a great reason to avoid Galleria mall traffic and crowds. Grab your $10 bill (or $20 bill if you’ve got a partner) and come skate! 09/10-IADG

Saturday 01-09

Runaway Sun with Ben Mallott at The Continental Club, 3700 Main, doors 9pm, show 9:30pm, $10. Tickets available in advance online at Sig’s Lagoon or at the door. This is Runaway Sun’s first show at the Continental since the LP release party/show in October. 10-M01-1

Friday 01-15 and Saturday 01-16

Mark Morris Dance Group, Wortham Theater Center (Cullen Theater), 8pm, 22-57. Presented by the Society for the Performing Arts as part of its Dance Series. For these shows, the Company will perform the following: Excursions with music by Samuel Barber; Going Away Party to the music of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys; Italian Concerto to the J. S. Bach score; and Grand Duo with music by Lou Harrison. 10-M01-2

Saturday 01-16

Ezra Charles at The Continental Club, 3700 Main, $10. Tickets available in advance online at Sig’s Lagoon or at the door. 10-M01-3

Thursday 01-21 through Saturday 01-23

Company Clare Dyson’s Voyeur at DiverseWorks, 1117 East Freeway, 8pm, tickets available online and are priced “pay what you want.” This is the US premiere of the performance installation of the Australian-based Company Clare Dyson. From the description: “In this exciting new work, audiences are not passive viewers, they choose where and how they view the performance. Seats on stage surround the set, situated in front of specially designed ‘peepholes,’ giving specialized viewing experiences. Some seats have binoculars, others headsets that reveal the performers’ inner monologues.” One of the most innovative twists on performing arts that I have heard of. A definite “don’t miss” performance! 10-M01-4

Friday 01-22

Be The Ball, Hermann Park Golf Course clubhouse, 2155 North MacGregor Dr. (at Almeda), 8-11pm (underwriters’ preview at 7pm), $100. (Rescheduled from original December date.) Tickets available online at Glasstire or by calling 713-850-0939. Featuring 80s music from Molly & the Ringwalds and an art auction with work from several top Texas artists, as well as the usual adult beverages (provided by Savvy Vodka, The Tasting Room, Max’s Wine Dive, and Saint Arnold Brewery) and snacks. 10-M01-5

Wednesday 01-27

Your Amsterdam as part of Wicked Wednesdays at Continental Club, 3700 Main, 8pm, $5. Also featuring Whiskey Boat, which apparently will be the usual Wednesday night act to start 2010. 10-M01-6

Saturday 01-30

D.R.U.M. at Continental Club, 3700 Main, $10 advance/$15 at door. African rhythm with a healthy influence of jazz, R&B, Latin, and pop. A true testament to the diversity of Houston’s music scene! 10-M01-7
