With the approach of Valentine’s Day each year comes events geared towards the occasion. And this year is no different. There’s no doubt that love is in the air once again, even if not every event fits the theme, and one flies right in the face of it.

Parody of Light, DiverseWorks, 1117 East Freeway, Wed-Sat noon-6pm. Patricia Hernandez critiques the business practices of Thomas Kinkade, “Painter of Light,” in this installation which resembles the interior of a home and shopping mall. Exhibit continues through February 26. 11-DWPARODY

Snowman Poker League hosts free Texas Hold’em poker tournaments at bars and pubs across the greater Houston area. Featured games this week: Nick’s Sports Bar & Grill, 1448 Wilcrest, Fri 7pm & 10pm; Barney’s #20, 8539 Gulf Freeway, Wed/Sat 7pm & 10pm. Z-SMP

I Shot Rock: The Music Photography of Mark C. Austin, Block 7 Wine Company, 720 Shepherd Dr., 6-8pm. A showcase of works from the renowned local photographer who specializes in music concert photography. If you are at all a fan of the Houston music scene, it’s almost certain you’ve seen at least a few of his pictures somewhere (most likely in the Houston Press or on the walls of the Green Room at Warehouse Live). This week, Frame Dance Productions is featured; back in 2010 May, Frame Dance was founded by Lydia Hance to connect Houston’s vibrant art community to the emerging Web 2.0 social media infrastructure. 11-W06-1

Catastrophic Theatre presents Paradise Hotel, a play by Richard Foreman which is described as “a frank, experimental play about the nature of physical and emotional satisfaction and the bipolar nature of American sexuality.” This play is intended for mature audiences. 11-CTPARADISE
